Pregnant Women Smoking!

First of all,one of the way to prevent people from beginning to smoke starts from the parents. They should not smoke in front of their children and even better not to have smoking habit at all. This habit can be followed by the children when they are grown up.Mothers are playing an important role in a family and also to the next generations therefore,up to 5% of infants death would be prevented if pregnant women did not smoke.

Do you know?More than 10% of women smoke throughout their pregnancies.Smoking is linked to an increased risk of early delivery and infant death. Research also suggests that infants of mothers who smoke during and after pregnancy are 2 to 3 times more likely to die from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) than babies born to non-smoking mothers. The risk of SIDS is somewhat less for infants whose mothers stop smoking during pregnancy, even if they start smoking again after delivery.

Other than that, the negative effects towards the baby is not only during the pregnancy but also after delivery through the breast milk that contains some harmful chemical from the tobacco.

Therefore,What do you think mothers should do to quit smoking during and after pregnancy?

in my opinion, every woman as mother should not smoking even their pregnant, after pregnant although their child grown up already because like what your article said this habit can be followed by the children . beside than that when their parents smoking surrounding them it will give bad impact for them especially for their health. So for every parents especially mother stop smoking!

Nice thinking,Ayeha
Smoking is harmfull for every human. Not only for women.Your article said that smoking might be affect to the children when they are pregnant.Basically all the children effected by their parents.
I just want to say that if any mother wants healthy life for her children she should give the smoke for ever. not only for the pregnant.

Hey Ayesha , firs if all, nice article, secondly I’m not agree with you in the part you mentioned “Parents should not smoke in front of their children and even better not to have smoking habit at all cause this habit can be followed by the children when they are grown up”. In this era we can’t control the youths since they all are more socialized compare to our generation. Once they reach to their teenage time, they start to hang out with their own friends and they come up with new staff regardless to the family they came from. Stop smoking in front of children its good but not because of preventing them from smoking, because they are not just isolated in the house. They got friends to hang out with and learn from them. My father smokes couple of packets per day because of his own life style but I didn’t follow him because I know the side effects of it on my body. I started smoking when I way 17 and I stopped it when I was 21 because I saw the long term affects on my father’s body. In fact fostering the children in such a way they can see the realties and giving them enough knowledge is better than hiding the realties from them.

Smoking is never good for health. But how many people can stop smoking? In my opinion, a woman should stop smoking when she is pregnant. It is because a baby share what their mother takes from mouth. A pregnant woman who smoke may harm not only her baby's health and life but also herself. As a mother, she must be responsible to take care of a young life.

I agree with Brad in the point of where not only parents play a role in their children’s activity like smoking. They have friends who gives them peer pressure or the kid just want to be cool. She/he thinks that smoking is COOL. This is never right. Coming back to square one where smoking is not a thing to just stop doing in a split second. It takes initiative to stop. If the woman does think of her future life of having healthy children, then she will gradually take the initiative to stop smoking.

In my opinion not just for woman but in general smoking is a bad thing for pregnant woman its even worse , smoking affect the baby in the womb by the smoke reaches the fetus through the placenta, the tissue that connects the mother and fetus. Among other important functions, the placenta provides nutrients to the fetus. When nicotine and carbon monoxide (toxins in cigarette smoke and second-hand smoke) enter the body, they reach the placenta and deprive it of oxygen and nutrients. As a result, the baby is also deprived.

Smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of miscarriage, a stillborn baby, a premature baby, or a baby with birth defects. Smoking damages the fetal lungs, which develop early and are exposed longer than other organs to tobacco toxins. It also harms the fetal brain by interfering with the placental exchange of oxygen.

Pregnant women who smoke are more likely to give birth to a low birth weight baby. This is a concern because smaller babies are more likely to be ill, to need special care, and to stay longer in hospital. They are also more likely to die at birth or within the first year.

A pregnant woman who smokes runs a higher risk of placenta previa (abnormal implantation of the placenta), abruptio placenta (premature separation of the placenta), or ruptured membranes (when the amniotic sac breaks prematurely).

The most serious health risk of smoking is the higher likelihood of having a baby die of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). SIDS is the leading cause of death in Canada for infants one month to one year old (see article on SIDS in this issue of In Touch). The risk of SIDS triples if the mother has smoked during pregnancy, and doubles if the child is only exposed to cigarette smoke after birth. Pregnant woman must stop smoking before or after !

You just can't stop somebody from smoking at a single stroke. You wouldn't expect a woman smoking for years to just quit immediately because she's pregnant. Simply mission impossible.

Pregnant women smoking is risky as well as it damages their reproductive system. Similarly, their child’s reproductive system will also be damaged more intensely. This could as well affect the sex life when the child grows into a big person. The semen count could be reduced in chances of a male. It could even make him impotent. In case of female the ovary and fallopian tubes are intensely damaged. This makes it difficult and at times even impossible to conceive babies.

Woman smokers, who are pregnant, should quit smoking and take care of their health is they are waiting for their babies desperately. Her only priority is the unborn baby and you must be attentive regarding the unborn baby’s health.
The first thing a woman smoker can do for her baby is to quit smoking. Because of the smoking habits, several problems can arise to the baby. Because of the smoking habit of the woman smoker, the unborn baby is at maximum danger of many kinds of diseases.
Every mother wants a healthy baby. But, the smoking habit of a woman smoker will never fulfill her wish of a healthy baby and it may harm your baby. Statistics show the considerable increment of woman smokers in United States.
A woman smoker who is a chain smoker should immediately quit smoking, when she decides to have a baby or when she is already expecting. Quitting smoking will prove to be beneficial for pregnant woman smokers as well as for her baby.
Pregnancy is the best period to quit smoking, if a woman smoker wants to quit smoking. It is the time, when a woman’s only priority is the baby and it would be easier for her to quit it.
As what Eric mentioned earlier that would be tough for woman smokers to quit smoking during the early period of pregnancy and she might feel unwell. However, at the same time it would be easier to quit smoking also, as it will not taste well to her.
Regarding baby’s health, it would be much beneficial, if woman smokers quit smoking before conceiving. Body should have no nicotine during pregnancy, as it will narrow down the blood vessels.
The blood vessels that are contracted because of nicotine, also includes the baby and the placenta. It will be better for baby, if woman smokers even avoid any other replacement of nicotine, such as patch or gum.
All these things are a little tough to woman smokers. But, if she do certain planning and make herself mentally strong, then definitely she will quit smoking. A woman smoker if quits before conceiving then the weight of the baby will be same as of the non-smoker woman’s baby.
Moreover, the baby will be quite normal if a woman smoker quits smoking during the initial phases of pregnancy then and she is saving the baby from many severe diseases.
Woman smokers should not again start smoking after the birth of baby. The baby is always closer to the mother and indirectly she is passing all the bad effects of smoke into the baby.
Abruption is caused because of nicotine, which at an early period separates fetus from placenta. This could also result in the death of the baby. Vasoconstriction is the narrowing of the blood vessels, which are carrying food and oxygen to the baby.
There are also dangers of attack of pediatric asthma and other kinds of allergies to the baby. There is the danger of leukemia, due to mother’s smoking habit. There are also several cases of Sudden Infant death due to woman smokers.
Placenta, which is actually a link between mother and the baby, is damaged with smoking. Baby weighs less than the normal baby does due to smoking of the mother. The child performance in school will degrade due to woman smoking habit.
In spite of such a long list of bad effects on the baby, if the mother still prefers to smoke then she must be ashamed of herself. Smoking habit is killing woman smokers and their baby. So, determine to quit smoking and bless child with healthy and long life.

Brad and Ee lynn i think what Ayesha was trying to say is that all childrens when they are growing they always want to be like their parents and beleive in their parents.
So if their parents were smokers it will be hard to try to confince them that smoking is bad because their parents smoke.
Untill maybe when they reach the ages of young men then they start to know what smoke can really do on you, like what my friend Brad said at the age of 21. Dont you think it allready did some damages to you and for others its impossible to quit. Let me take this opprtinity to congratulate you for quitting.

For me i will never get married to a women who is a smoker because of all the effects Ayesha said that will have on the babies and am not a smoker even. I will although try to speak to ladies who smoke and motivate them to quit smoking.

We all know smoking in pregnancy is not good and many people say that it is not easy to quit the smoking habit but there have some ways to quit smoking during the pregnancy. Such as
• Hide your matches, lighters, and ashtrays.
• Designate your home a non-smoking area.
• Ask people who smoke not to smoke around you.
• Drink less caffeinated beverages; caffeine may stimulate your urge to smoke. Also avoid alcohol, as it may also increase your urge to smoke and can be harmful to your baby.
• Change your habits connected with smoking. If you smoked while driving or when feeling stressed, try other activities to replace smoking.
• Keep mints or gum (preferably sugarless) on hand for those times when you get the urge to smoke.
• Stay active to keep your mind off smoking and help relieve tension: take a walk, exercise, read a book, or try a new a hobby.
• Look for support from others. Join a support group or smoking cessation program.
• Do not go places where many people are smoking such as bars or clubs, and smoking sections of restaurants.
