Smoking affected the Economy!!!!

Some said that government benefits from smoking taxes but some said that by quitting smoking will give economic benefits for you and for the government. In my opinion, both research are true depending on the economic costs of smoking.

First of all,the immediate benefits of quitting smoking to you is that you will have more cash in your pocket. In economic language, there is whooping $130 billion of real resource costs of smoking in The United States. That is to say this $130 billion is more burdensome to the US economy than collecting the taxes. It imposes a tax on the consumer, but provides offsetting revenues to the government.

According to a study, smoking related illnesses cost the US, $60 billion per year. It can only mean one thing- the waste of scarce medical resources. If we can eliminate smoking tomorrow, the resulting savings can partially offset our GDP deficits. If a smoker smokes more than one packet a day, he will spend an amount of $25000.

Other than that, the cost of shortened lives also have give an impact to the government. Smokers tend to be younger and retire sooner. This carries a price of $80 billion to the US economy due to lost output and lost wages. Also the absentee rate among smokers is very high.

Therefore, by quitting smoking it can give economic benefits to the government by reducing the losses of the wages, medical resources, cost of smoking and etc. Do you think the same? Why?

I do not agree with your statement. Have you ever seen any cat to get mouse just to the god’s sake? No away!!!! These Americans are just alleging the expenses which have occurred by the domestic consumers. How about the hatch of exporting cigarettes? Do you thing these dominants may suffer even 1 $ in their businesses? Just try to find out the statistics to see how much of income they have gained through this business? Not only the Americans, even the importers through Asian countries may gain lots of cash by cigarettes via the tariff taxes and job creations and so on.

In my opinion, it is impossible for everyone to quit smoking. Maybe government can reduce the numbers of smokers by increasing the taxs on cigarattes. In other words, government can gain higher profit and also can reduce the numbers of smokers.

I certainly have to agree with Brad were cigarettes business does not affect ones country’s economy. People spend when they need to buy cigarettes and by spending, it does help the country’s economy. In addition, with the taxes that the companies are paying the government, it is impossible that this business affects ones country’s economy.

Actually when people buy cigarette it help country's economy such as the cigarette firm will pay tax to government and they also absorb employment (decrease unemployment in country). It is not easy for government to simply stop everybody to smoke because it will affect country economy sharply but government can minimize number of smokers by increase price of cigarette and give limit for every shop and firm to sell cigarette every day.

I agree that smoking must stop , but affecting in an economy scale i don't think so , where else would the government get that kind of money coming in from if it wasnt for people buying this cigarettes. they make an absolute fortune from smokers and if we all stopped what would they do to bring in the money?.

They do not really want people to stop, though if they would want to do it you can guarantee everything else would increase to keep the money coming in through taxes.

Bardia, smoking has absolutely NOTHING to do with the americans. They are forcing nobody to smoke.
Let's be realistic, smoking would never be stopped. Reduced, yes, maybe.
Smoking does bring alot, alot of benefits to government, but if you compare it with the social costs it brings, you would see there's a deficit.

Eason said that if the goverment increase the cigerattes rate then it will be reduce.Yes it will be reduce for few days but it will never be effect to the smokers.

Today UK economic is very strong one of the reason is they are the highest secret producers.

The tobacco industry is one of the most profitable businesses in the country; in 1998 tobacco manufacturers' revenue was $50 billion. Nevertheless, the costs of smoking are far higher than the income from cigarette sales. Medical costs alone caused directly by smoking total between $50 billion and $73 billion each year. Lost economic productivity caused by smoking also costs the US economy more than $50 billion each year. This totals more than $100 billion lost each year to health care costs and lost productivity due to smoking.

Of course these numbers represent only the financial costs. No statistic can express the devastation of pain and suffering caused by cigarette smoking.

Hi. Lets give u "WOW" ..i dint know that so much money could be safe by quitting it!! But one thing I know that if we calculate it in a smaller amount, it will be not enough even to buy TV! Dont believe me???? just calculate. divide entire amount to entire smokers population and it will be very little, but if we calculate by cigarette makers, they are really good players. they making billions from smokers pocket and paying as well billions for their business.

we all know that business in grugs can make you earn a lot of profit within a short period of time.
If thee government want to stop smokers from smoking by putting more higher taxes on cigarettes it will do no much differene. You can find now around you people who earn incomes daily and very low income but they are still willing to buy the cigarettes.
So increasing the taxes will have no much effect but what the government can do is to put more money on the advertisements and awareness to people about the bad effects of smoking and they can also ran free programmes for smokers who are willing to stop smoking and so help them.
So making people understand and helping them will have more effects than increaseing taxes
